What? Why? When?

First up, what is a timing chain, cam belt or wet belt?

They are a device in your engine that effectively synchronise the components in the bottom of your engine (crank, con rods and pistons) with the components in the top of your engine (camshafts, valves etc).

Why does it need changing?

When a timing belt, chain or wet belt fails, it can cause the pistons to collide with the valves and cause serious internal engine damage. To prevent failure, vehicle manufacturers normaly advise a time and mileage based replacement interval.

When does it need changing?

Change intervals vary by many factors including engine type, vehicle usage etc. On top of that vehicle manufacturers often modify the change intervals if problems occur with a certain engine type. If you're not sure how often your cam belt or timing chain is due , contact Motorvation, we can look up the latest technical data for your vehicle for you.

Cam Belt & Timing Chain Replacement

Cam Belts

The cam belt (also known as a timing belt, wet belt or camshaft drive belt) is a toothed belt that connects the crankshaft to the camshafts in many engines. Alternative engine designs may use timing chains or gears to achieve the same goal.

Failure of the cam belt will normally lead to catastrophic engine damage as the pistons make contact with the much smaller valves.

Vehicle manufacturers normally recommended intervals for cam belt replacement. These normally consist of a mileage and a date. Eg, 60,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes sooner. These intervals can vary from vehicle to vehicle. Even similar vehicles' cam belt intervals can vary by model year - it can be a bit of mine-field.

Not to worry though, our technicians are on hand to advise on the correct intervals for your vehicle, just get in touch.

Timing Chains

Rather than a cam belt, many engine designs use a timing chain instead. The timing chain does exactly the same job as a cam belt but uses a chain instead of a toothed belt.

Due to the increased strength of the chain over a toothed belt many manufacturers consider these to be able to last the life of the vehicle. Therefore there is often no recommended interval for timing chain replacement.

That said, many engines fitted with timing chains do suffer with issues such as chain stretch, tensioner and guide failure, pulley wear etc. Sometimes this can be caused by irregular servicing or the incorrect oil grades being used.

These normally manifest themselves as harsh rattles from the engine, especially on cold start or engine deceleration. If you're engine is sounding harsh or rattling (especially on start up), don't put off having it checked - it may save you a lot of money in the long run.

At Motorvation, we are skilled and equipped to replace the timing chain for most manufacturers and engine types.

To find out if your vehicle has a cam belt or timing chain or to book a free check please get in touch.

Wet Belts

Wet Belts are the relative new kid in town, used by manufacturers such as Ford, Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall.

Wet belt reliability has proven to be not the best. Sometimes failures can be attributed to incorrect engine oils or extended durations between services.

We are equipped and skilled for the replacement of wet belts found in Ford vehicles and Peugeot Citroen Group vehicles.

If you are concerned that you may have a wet belt or for any advice, please get in touch.

Just one last word of warning, if the brake pedal on your Ford has gone hard or your oil pressure light on your Ford / Citroen / Peugeot is flashing, stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so and please, get in touch.
